The war on drugs in America has been a war that has been going on for a long time that has seen very little results. There are more people addicted to some type of mind altering substance in this country than there ever has been in the entire history of civilization. Granted, there are many more people that are alive in this day and age than there ever has been, but the amount of those people that are addicted to some type of drug or medication is staggering.

Prescription Medications

One of the main problems is that the drug companies are so wealthy and have so much power in this country. Every day the FDA approves more and more medications that may or may not be habit forming and or life threatening. It has become a part of a great portion of the American culture to take a medication or to self-medicate every time a person does not feel happy or good about life or themselves. Of course there is a place for medicine in life where it really does the person who is taking the medication more harm than it does good. Having pneumonia is a great example where it is definitely better to take some type of drug than it is to just wait it out and see what happens. If someone has something tragic happen to them that is temporary, is it really better to put them on some type of drug that has the possibility to make them suicidal? There are many reports of all types of anti-depressants causing suicidal thoughts and or actions in some patients. The warning for this is right there, even on the advertisements on TV.

In addition to anti-depressant, another drug that is supposed to be obtained by prescription only, that a lot of people are addicted to is oxycodone, otherwise known as Oxycontin. Oxycontin is the number one abused prescription drug in America today. It is supposed to be prescribed to patients that are suffering from severe amounts of pain, and people are only supposed to be able to obtain it through a prescription. The fact that so many people are addicted to it means that someone somewhere is not doing their job properly.

In addition, there are many high school age children who admitted to using this drug, and sometimes their parents did not even have any idea that their kid had a drug problem. There was one case where a young man overdosed on prescription drugs and his parents were completely shocked because they thought their son had never even used drugs in his life. Because these drugs are so easy for people to obtain, and because so many of them are labeled as medicine, kids often really think nothing of popping a few pills, that are mind altering drugs, to make themselves feel a little better or a little more numb.

One can believe that every prescription drug that is sold on the street, a drug company at some point made a profit from. THEY ARE THE ONES PRODUCING THEM!! That is why the drug companies don’t have any problem pumping out mass quantities of all these habit forming drugs onto the American public. They are making way too much money from them. If they are addictive, all the better; it ensures a customer for life. It is the same as it was when the tobacco companies were making profits off of teens smoking their cigarettes. Does anyone actually believe that the people in the tobacco companies cared about the people that were getting cancer from their cigarettes? Of course not… they made too much money off each person before they died.

There are attempts at some level to stop drug use like the drug test for welfare(mandatory drug testing for welfare recipients), but in actuality this has been shown to do little good. It seems like a good idea, but so far there have been too few people who have actually caught from this procedure to make it worth it for tax payers to pay for.

Drug Education

One of the most effective ways to curb drug addiction is through drug prevention. If kids are made aware of the dangers of drugs through the school systems and from their parents at home, in way that they understand and that they can relate to, they are much less likely to use drugs. Parents need to be especially diligent in this matter, because whether or not one feels like their child is listening to them, the fact of the matter is that children do have respect for what their parents believe and say and children are going to be effected by this.

If a parent has a good relationship with their child and spends enough quality time with that child and then tells the child about the dangers of drugs, the child is much less likely to use drugs. It is also shown that kids who have a close relationship with their parents are more likely to have good self-esteem and are less likely to use drugs because they believe in themselves and are happy.
