This is the story of one man who suffered from an addiction to alcohol. He went through the Narconon program and was able to overcome this addiction. We will call him Chad to protect his identity. This is not his real name. Chad grew up in a single-parent family home. His parents had gotten divorced when he was three years old. His mother and his father did not get along very well at all during his childhood.

From the time the Chad was five years old until he was 11 years old, he was very active in sports, specifically baseball. He also liked basketball very much. When Chad was 12 years old he moved into his father’s home with his sister, and he lived there for one year. It was at this point that Chad decided that he did not like his father very much and he was very angry with his father for breaking up his family. He began to feel very angry towards his father and this anger would continue to grow until he was 24 years old. He only stayed at his dad’s house for one year until he moved back into his mother’s home. Upon returning to his mother’s house he was not the same child that he was when he left. Also, it was that year Chad’s doctors decided that he had to have an operation to correct a defect that was wrong with the with his back that he had been born with. He had the operation the summer before he was to start high school. When he started high school he was still recovering from his surgery so he was unable to play any sports. Because of this he began to experiment with drugs and alcohol.

Chad Addiction Begins

Instead of playing sports, Chad began going to parties. He says that at first he did not really enjoy the way alcohol made him feel; he would only drink so he would feel a part of the crowd. He also began to smoke a lot of marijuana. By the time Chad was 15 he was also using cocaine. By the time he was 16 he used heroin for the first time. He became quite addicted to heroin and when he was 17, almost 18 years old, his mother sent him away to a four-month rehab in Jamaica. Chad said that he hated the rehab because he was not ready to get help yet. When he came back, he immediately started using heroin again and moved out of his mother’s house. Around this time he also came into a very good job that paid him lots of money. He would spend all of his money on drugs and alcohol and partying. He continued this lifestyle until he was 24 years old.

Chad Starts to Deal with Some of His Deeper Issues

When Chad was 24, his mother came to him and begged him to go to rehab. She told him that she had found a very good center in Canada and she really felt that it would help him overcome his addiction. Chad realized that he did need help and decided that he was willing to go. While in Canada, Chad dealt with some of the deeper issues that he’d been avoiding through his addiction and also confronted the misdeeds that he committed. He said that this helped him very much and he was in much better shape when he returned home.

Chad moved into his mother’s house and was able to get rehired at his old job. Unfortunately about a month after he’d gotten home, he ran into one of his old using friends. He said that he thought to himself that he could use just one time and he would be able to handle it. This, unfortunately, was not the case. He went on a two week binge with his friend. In this time he got fired from his job and when he came home he found that his mother had changed the locks on the doors and would not let him back in. She told him until he got himself together by himself she no longer wanted to have anything to do with him.

At this point Chad checked himself into a halfway house in Florida. He cut all ties with his old friends and was able to stay sober for three years. During this time he was able to save up some money, and also rented himself a fairly decent house. After three years he was laid off from the job that he got in Florida and decided to move back to his hometown. When he was laid off he also began to drink very heavily. He continued to drink very heavily for the next two years. He would stay drunk all day every day, and when he would try to quit drinking he would go through physical withdrawal.

Chad Gets the Help He Needs at Narconon

Chad continued on this way until he got into a car accident and was charged with a DUI. Under the recommendation from his lawyer, he decided to go to rehab. The rehab he decided to go to was Narconon. He did the entire Narconon program and did very well. He says now that he realizes that there were many issues that he’d never dealt with. He had always told himself because he was only drinking alcohol and not using drugs he did not have a problem. He says now he realizes that alcoholism was one of the strongest addictions that he’d ever suffered from. He said when he did the Narconon objectives, he dealt with issues that were inside of him that he did not even know were there. He says that the rest of the program gave him the tools that he needed to live a drug-free, productive life. He says that he does not miss alcohol at all or any other drug because he is happier now at his worst moments than he was in his best moments when he was getting messed up.
