Drug Abuse

A recent FDA proposal urged doctors to get training in prescription drugs, but did not mandate it.  For this reason it was not approved and the FDA will have to go back to the drawing board.  Sadly, it appears that doctors have to be “ordered” to learn the wares of their trade.

Hopefully, we have enough doctors with enough of an ethics level to know that they must get trained in prescribing dangerous drugs like Oxycontin, Xanax and Adderall. Drug Abuse is high with all of these medications.

They must also know effective drug treatment centers so they refer those patients who do get addicted from the over prescribed drugs.

“A lack of mandated training for physicians has helped sink a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposal intended to curb misuse of prescription drugs, the New York Times reported July 23.

The FDA advisory committee voted 25-10 to reject the plan, with most members saying the proposal was not stringent enough to effectively cut the misuse of drugs like OxyContin, fentanyl, and methadone. The agency typically goes along with its advisory-council recommendations.

The plan urged doctors to get voluntary training in prescribing powerful painkillers but did not require that they do so. “
