Well, the south seems to be getting its comfort from their over use of prescription drugs.  Studies show that West Virginia has the highest number of prescription medication refills of the entire United States, followed closely by Tennessee and Alabama.  Does this seem like a bigger problem? Studies also show that the south is less educated than other states. So is this a direct correlation? Are the less educated the ones abusing drugs?  No, I don’t believe so.  I truly believe that people that don’t do their research and only rely on their Dr’s opinion are the ones that are getting addicted to the prescription drugs.

West Virginia leads the nation in prescription drug use, with the average person filling about 18.4 prescriptions

a year. The national average is 11.6. Tennessee was the second most heavily medicated state, with 16.9; Alabama, 16.7; Kentucky, 16.5; and Arkansas, 16.4, according to data gathered from retail pharmacies

and compiled by health care information company SDI. The data was reported by Forbes magazine and other media outlets.

Many Dr’s prescribed medications to people without a thought that they are prescribing to a drug addict.  Drug Addiction among regular patients is extraordinary.

Drug Treatment Centers are seeing this trend in their local drug rehabs.  Many people seeking the assistance of drug addiction counselors are addicted to prescription drugs.
