People often drink when they go out to eat, they drink when they are celebrating with is why statistics show alcohol abuse/Drunk driving higher around holidays. A person can walk into almost any grocery store and find a section that is filled with almost any type of alcoholic beverage that a person could want. Even some drug stores sell beer and wine. Driving around, there are many billboards showing how much fun a person is supposed to have while drinking. The recovering alcoholic can often feel that the very thing that they are trying to get away from is shoved in their face everywhere they look.

Alcoholism Affects the Body and the Mind

When a person is suffering from long term alcohol abuse it is very wearing on their mind as well as their body. Alcohol also affects a person’s brain function and it is not yet known weather this damage can be permanent or not. When a person uses alcohol to excess it often cause vitamin deficiencies, especially B vitamin deficiencies. B1 is one of the first things that is burned when a person drinks. B1 is very important to all body functions, including brain function. Because it is water soluble, a person has to consume it every day to sustain the needed amount in the body. When a person drinks and does not eat properly for a long period of time and suffers from B1 deficiency, it can be very dangerous for their brain and cause temporary and permanent damage. When this happens the treatment is usually just B1 supplementation. If this does not restore the person’s cognitive ability, it can be assumed the damage has become permanent and that the person is going to have to be cared for, for the rest of their lives often, in a home.

Why Someone Starts Drinking

Most people first start drinking socially. It is not really known why some people can start drinking and then leave it alone and other people start drinking and become alcoholics. Narconon addresses addiction as a disability, including addiction to alcohol. When a person does not have the abilities that are needed to cope with life, they often use alcohol or drugs as way to avoid their problems. When the person drinks, they feel a temporary relief from their problems and they feel a little better about life. When a person becomes addicted to alcohol it usually is because they get to the point where the only way that they know to deal with negativity is through drinking.

The drinking then becomes the person’s biggest problem and to them the solution to all problems is to drink more. To break this cycle of addiction, the person needs to learn the coping skills and life tools that they need to deal with problems on life’s terms as opposed to drinking to deal with them.

Narconon

When a person starts their Narconon alcohol treatment, the first thing that they deal with is the physical aspect of their addiction. The person will sometimes have to do a medical detox, depending on how much they were drinking. Quitting cold turkey can be life threatening and safety is always first. The person will then go through the Narconon New Life Detoxification program. This is a specific regimen of vitamins and minerals and sweating in a dry heat sauna to help the person rid their bodies of all the residuals and unwanted toxins that became accumulated in their fatty stores due to heavy drinking over the years. This helps the person regain an overall physical and mental sense of well-being that will be needed to deal with the rest of the issues and why the person may have started drinking in the first place.

The person will then undergo a series life skills building courses that will enable the person to figure out why they first got started using in the first place, while giving them the tools that they will need to ensure that they never drink again.

The first course the person will undergo is a communication course. Most alcoholics have trouble communicating and most problems can be handled with effective and good communication. This will help them for the rest of their program and also with the rest of their life. The person will then learn the tools that are needed to surround themselves with good people. They will learn the characteristics of the social and the anti-social personality and what kind of people will help them in their life and what kind of people will just bring them down. The next course in the program is the only one that could be compared to something someone does in AA. The person does what is the equivalent of a personal inventory and comes to terms with all the things that they have done in their life that they feel guilty about. They put these things in the past so that they can move on to the future without their guilt haunting them and causing them urges to drink.

The person will then do a course that will help them take a look at all aspects of their life and figure out what they need to do going forward to repair the damage done due to their addiction and also how to continuously improve their lives from here on out. They then do a course that will teach them morals because many alcoholics and addicts don’t have a good moral background to go off of and if they do it is often forgotten. The person then makes a basic plan of what they are going to do when they leave to ensure their sobriety. If you or a loved one needs help with alcoholism please don’t hesitate to call.
