Narconon Program Helps Young Woman Overcome Her Addiction

This is the story of one young woman who went to the Narconon Program to get over her addiction to drugs and alcohol. We will call her Dorothy.

Dorothy was raised in an upper middle class home as an only child. Her parents divorced when she was five and she lived with her mother and grandparents the majority of her early childhood. She would see her father occasionally but not as much as she would have liked because once her parents got a divorce her father moved across the country. Dorothy said that her dad would call her occasionally but she never felt like she was a priority in his life. Her mother was business woman and would work long hours. When Dorothy started school her mother decided that it would be better if she went to live with her grandparents during the week because they were both retired and would have more time to give to Dorothy when she got out of school in the afternoon. Dorothy would then go see her mother on the weekends.

Dorothy said that she would really miss her mother during the week and be very happy when she would see her mother’s car in front of the school to pick her up on Fridays. She said that whenever she would see other kids parents at events and she would not have her own there it always made her sad. She said that overall she is glad that she lived with her grandparents for the time that she did because they did give her a lot of attention and made sure that she always did her homework and kept up with her school work.

Dorothy Moves Back in With Her Mom

When Dorothy was eleven, her mother decided that she was old enough to move back in with her and she would have to keep up with her own school work. Dorothy said that she was kind of sad to leave her grandparents house but she was also excited at the prospect of moving back in with her mother. She said that the atmosphere was completely different at her mom’s house. She said that her grandparents had always been kind of strict with her and that she had always known what she was allowed to do and what she was not allowed to do. Her mom did not really give her any rules and worked many hours every week so Dorothy was often left to make her own rules.

Dorothy said that for a while this was not a problem because she was still enrolled in the private school that she had attended when she lived in her grandparent’s home. She said that there were just not that many bad influence around at her school and the friends that she had there were all good. However, when Dorothy turned twelve her mother decided that she was going to put Dorothy in public school. Dorothy said that her mom never made sure that she was doing her homework and often times she would not do it. This affected her grades and once her mother saw how poorly Dorothy was doing she decided that public school would be the answer because it would probably be easier to get good grades.

Dorothy said that once she went to public school everything took a major turn for the worse. She immediately got in with the worst crowd around because she said that they were the easiest to talk to. She said that her self-esteem was very low at the time and she was intimidated by the popular kids at her new school. Dorothy started smoking cigarettes and before long she was smoking marijuana and drinking as well. Her mother was hardly ever at home during the day and her mother smoked so when Dorothy and her friends smoked pot in her house her mom did not notice. Dorothy said that her mom was so busy with work that she hardly ever noticed what Dorothy was up to.

Within a few years Dorothy was using harder drugs and by the time she was seventeen she was using opiates. Right around this time her mom decided to send her to rehab. Dorothy stayed in rehab over the summer for three months and when she went back to school in the fall, she was able to maintain her sobriety and focus on her studies. She said that it was a real problem for her staying clean and that she craved drugs all the time. She also said that she did not want to be a drug addict for all of her life so she was committed to staying clean.

Dorothy Falls in Love and has Children

When Dorothy was eighteen and started looking at which colleges to go to she met a guy at a party that she would eventually end up marrying. She said that she felt like it was pretty much love at first sight and within three months of Dorothy dating the guy she became pregnant. They ended up getting married a few months later and within a year Dorothy was pregnant again. She said that when she first had her children it was very east to stay sober and be a good mom. She said that after a while she got really lonely however and that was when problems came up. She said her husband worked all the time and Dorothy stayed at home with their two little ones. She said she did not really know anyone where she lived and before long she got depressed. She said that that was when she started drinking. She said once she started it got really bad really fast. She said she started leaving her kids with her in-laws more and more so she could go out and party. She said that when someone would look at her page on Facebook Alcohol or drug centered activities were what dominated. She said there were hardly any pictures of her kids. Finally her in-laws intervened and decided to send Dorothy to rehab.

Dorothy went to Narconon of Georgia two and half years ago and had this to say about the experience “I have no doubt in my mind about my ability to stay sober and a good mom from here on out. I realized after I did the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program that the reason that I still craved drugs and alcohol were because they were still affecting my body. I feel physically and mentally better now than I have since I was a kid. I have the tools I need to be a good mom and to succeed in anything else I do. Thank you.”
